AFTER ELVIS: WHICH FEMALE STAR DESERVES AMERICA'S STAMP OF APPROVAL?
 SURVEY SHOWS AMERICA LOVES LUCY
NEW YORK, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The great election of 1992 is over. And George Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot weren't even on the ballot.
 But Elvis was.
The Postal Service asked Americans to vote for the Elvis Presley commemorative postage stamp they liked best. And the winner (the young Elvis) was announced this morning.
But now isn't it time for a stamp celebrating a great female entertainer? Who do you think the Postal Service should honor?
The results of a new survey may surprise you.
The survey was commissioned by She Knows!!, manufacturers of women's junior sportswear. It was conducted for the clothing company by the same research organization which tallied the Elvis Presley stamp votes.
The She Knows!! poll asked a statistically representative national sampling of 1,000 men and women: Which female superstar most deserves a stamp?
Here's who they said they would vote for:
 Lucille Ball 45 percent
 Judy Garland 14 percent
 Marilyn Monroe 13 percent
 Barbra Streisand 9 percent
 Cher 2 percent
 Madonna 2 percent
 Other mentions 3 percent
 Don't Know/No Response 12 percent
"There's no doubt that America still loves Lucy," said She Knows!! President Charles Polin.
Polin said that men have had "a virtual monopoly" on U.S. entertainment postage stamps, while women have been "woefully neglected."
According to the U.S. Postal Service, stamps have celebrated such male entertainment artists and personalities as W.C. Fields, Will Rogers, Jerome Kern, Abbott and Costello, Duke Ellington, Walt Disney, Stephen Foster, Cole Porter, Douglas Fairbanks, Enrico Caruso, Laurel and Hardy, Arturo Toscanini, George Gershwin and Jack Benny, and the Elvis stamp will be issued early next year.
But the only female entertainer to be honored with her own stamp was comedian Fanny Brice.
"Not only have women been historically short-changed," said Polin, "they are still being short-stamped."
He said the other women "nominated" by a few survey participants included Bette Davis, Diana Ross, Billie Holiday, Katherine Hepburn, Mae West, Greta Garbo, Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Walters.
She Knows!! is a division of the Kellwood Company (a Fortune 500 company), one of the world's largest manufacturers and marketers of apparel and home fashions.
