AFSCME INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT LINDA CHAVEZ-THOMPSON ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF THE AFL-CIO

 WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The AFL-CIO Executive Council today elected Linda Chavez-Thompson as a member of that body. Chavez- Thompson is executive director of AFSCME Local 2399 in San Antonio and an international vice president of AFSCME, a post to which she was first elected in 1988. She represents AFSCME's Southwestern district, a seven-state area which includes Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.
 Also elected to the executive council was Gloria T. Johnson, a member of the IUE Executive Board and president of the Coalition of Labor Union Women.
 AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee, who is also a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council, hailed the elections as "the boldest step that the AFL-CIO has ever taken to reflect the nation's diverse work force in labor's highest council."
 Chavez-Thompson is a Mexican-American, and Johnson is an African- American.
 Since 1986, Chavez-Thompson has been a vice president of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement. She is a board member of both the San Antonio and Texas AFL-CIOs.
 A native of Lubbock, Texas, Chavez-Thompson began working in the labor movement in 1967. In 1970, she coordinated Texas AFL-CIO operations assisting in recovery efforts for victims of the tornado that struck Lubbock in May of that year. Since 1972, she has lived in San Antonio, where she has been active in the community and in the political arena. She served two terms on the Metropolitan Transit Authority and the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women.
