AFRICAN-AMERICAN LAWYER RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS NEXT WEEK TO HELP CAPE VERDE PRIME MINISTER ON ECONOMY, PRIVATIZATION

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- An African-American attorney whose ancestors came from Cape Verde, Africa, is leaving next week to work with the Cape Verde government on privatizing the nation and strengthening U.S.-African economic ties. He will be in Cape Verde for three months.
Joe Moniz, a 45-year-old partner with Day, Berry & Howard, Connecticut's largest law firm, is an advocate and articulate spokesman on the cutting edge trend of black Americans returning to their forebears' homeland to develop economic ties with the U.S.
His case is unusual for several reasons:
-- Moniz can trace his roots. Most African-Americans cannot because their ancestry came over on slave ships.
-- Moniz' law firm has a three-month sabbatical program, giving him this opportunity.
-- Nelson Mandela has urged African-Americans to undertake these efforts, and Moniz has met with Mandela.
-- Moniz has twice met with the Cape Verde Prime Minister and the mayor of Hartford, Conn., and Santa Catherina, Cape Verde are to become sister cities.
-- Connecticut Gov. Lowell Weicker is interested in exchange program to educate Cape Verde residents in Connecticut and then have them return to work in Cape Verde. Part of Moniz' mission on the trip will be to identify students.
