AFL-CIO URGES REFORM OF SENATE RULES

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The AFL-CIO issued the following:
The AFL-CIO has long fought to reform the current U.S. Senate rules that allow a minority of senators to thwart the will of the majority of both houses of Congress. We welcome the Democratic Study Group's efforts to change these rules.
It is time to put an end to the false civility and empty collegiality and to treat Senate filibusters and similar tactics for what they are -- as a tactic to abort the democratic process.
Such tactics contribute to gridlock and hold the will of the American people hostage to the whims of a few individual senators.
Over the years, the AFL-CIO has repeatedly supported reform of filibuster rules. But the reforms that have been accomplished have been only incremental steps toward making the Senate a more democratic and effective body. Now it is time the Congress took the next step and reformed the Senate rules.
