AFL-CIO STATEMENT ON UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT FOR MAY

WASHINGTON, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The AFL-CIO issued the following statement on the Labor Department's unemployment report for May:
The decrease in unemployment and increase in total jobs are positive signs.
But those signs are tempered by the loss of 39,000 manufacturing jobs in the past month and nearly 300,000 over the past year.
May's employment gains were largely confined to part-time work -- three-quarters of the total.
America's workers need full-time jobs and good-paying jobs -- not part-time, low-wage substitutes for the manufacturing employment workers once could count on to help provide a decent standard of living.
Today's figures show America's need for job programs and trade policies that will create good-paying jobs in America.
