AFL-CIO PRESIDENT COMMENTS ON AUGUST UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES
WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland made the following comment on the unemployment figures for August:
The slight drop in the official unemployment rate in August belies what is really happening to American workers in this pitiful economy.
It can be attributed to one thing, and that is a summer jobs program for teen-agers financed by federal dollars. The jobless rate among adults actually went up.
Meanwhile, surveys show that the total number of jobs in this country continues to decrease at an alarming rate. In August alone, we lost another 122,000 manufacturing jobs.
Remember, the government doesn't count as jobless those people who cannot find anything better than part-time work or who have given up looking because there are no jobs for them. If you were to include these "invisible" Americans in the official statistics, the nation's jobless rate would be 14 percent, or nearly 18 million people.
