AFL-CIO EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ELECTS TWO NEW MEMBERS

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The AFL-CIO Executive Council this morning elected two new members, Gloria Johnson of the Electronic Workers (IUE) and Linda Chavez-Thompson of AFSCME.
Johnson, 65, is a member of the Executive Board of IUE, a union she has served since May 1954. She is currently director of the IUE social action department and in May of this year was elected president of the Coalition of Labor Union Women. She holds a master's degree from Howard University in Washington and is a longtime board member of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the AFL-CIO's African-American support group.
Chavez-Thompson, 49, is a vice president of AFSCME and is a board member of both the San Antonio and Texas AFL-CIOs. She joined the AFSCME staff in 1971 after four years with the Laborers. Since 1986, she has been a vice president of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.
The two new AFL-CIO vice presidents fill vacancies created by the resignations of Joyce Miller of the Clothing & Textile Workers and Jack Otero of the Transportation Communications Unions, both of who were named by the Clinton administration to Labor Department positions.
Johnson and Chavez-Thompson join Lenore Miller of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Unions as the three women members on the council. Six women have been elected, with two others in addition to Joyce Miller serving previous terms.
