AFFYMETRIX RECEIVES $500,000 PHASE II SBIR GRANT

 PALO ALTO, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Affymetrix, a subsidiary of Affymax N.V. (NASDAQ: AFMXF), announced today that it has received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for $500,000 from the Department of Energy. The grant will fund work on the application of the Affymax VLSIPS(TM) chip technology to DNA sequencing and genetic analysis.
 The grant will support technology development at Affymetrix, which is creating a new generation of DNA-based diagnostic products. These products will be important for the understanding and diagnosis of the genetic basis of human disease.
 "In the first phase of this grant, we demonstrated the proof of concept for creating large arrays of DNA probes for use in genetic analysis," stated Stephen P.A. Fodor, chief technical officer of Affymetrix and the grant's Principal Investigator. "Phase II should help enable Affymetrix to move the technology towards commercialization."
 Affymetrix is developing innovative systems for the research instrumentation, clinical diagnostic and emerging genetic analysis markets. Affymetrix is focused on developing and commercializing technology which will enable researchers and clinicians to explore genetic information rapidly and cost-effectively. Affymetrix is a wholly owned subsidiary of Affymax N.V. Affymax is developing new technologies to accelerate the pace of drug discovery.
