AFFILIATED PUBLICATIONS PRESIDENT JOHN GIUGGIO TO RETIRE
NEW YORK, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- John P. Giuggio, who joined the Boston Globe's staff as a messenger boy 47 years ago and rose up through the ranks to become president and chief operating officer of its parent company, Affiliated Publications, Inc. (NYSE: AFP), announced his retirement in New York today.
Giuggio told financial analysts attending the John Morton Forum that he will resign from his position effective July 1.
"I have had a wonderful ride in a wonderful company during a most exciting time," he declared in a brief address to the analysts, many of whom he has known for years.
That "most exciting time" spanned nearly five decades, during which Giuggio held a wide variety of positions at the Globe as he worked his way to the top, including stints as advertising salesman, advertising manager, business manager and treasurer.
He was named chief operating officer of Affiliated Publications and president of the Globe in 1982 and helped lead the company during an explosive period of growth. Affiliated's net earnings increased from $17,196,000 in 1982 to a peak of $58,310,000 in 1987, an increase of 239 percent.
Giuggio is also credited over the years with promoting a number of programs in the area of community service, all of which resulted in high visibility for the Globe. These include the Globe Santa Program, which contributes toys to over 50,000 needy children in the Boston area; the Paper Route to College, which has provided over $5 million in college tuitions to Globe newscarriers; and, most recently, a program launched in March to help the unemployed by offering free Situations Wanted ads in the Globe, a project that has received national attention.
William O. Taylor, Affiliated's chairman of the board, told the Morton Forum analysts that Giuggio would continue to serve the company as a director of Affiliated and the Globe, and also as a consultant.
A graduate of the Boston College School of Management, Giuggio is a trustee of Boston College and Emmanuel College, and has served on the boards of numerous professional and civic organizations.
He and his wife, Barbara (Savage), live in Cohasset, Mass.
