AFFILIATED PUBLICATIONS NOMINATES KATHERINE W. FANNING TO BOARD
BOSTON, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- William O. Taylor, chairman of the board of Affiliated Publications (NYSE: AFP), announced today that Katherine W. Fanning, former editor of the Christian Science Monitor and past president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, has been nominated to Affiliated's board of directors.
Her name will be submitted for election at the company's annual meeting to be held on May 20.
Fanning will fill a vacancy on Affiliated's board left by Adele Simmons, president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, who will resign effective May 20 due to the press of other commitments.
A leading expert on ethical practices in journalism, Fanning has been involved in the newspaper business since 1967, holding a wide variety of positions.
As editor and publisher of the Anchorage Daily News, in Anchorage Alaska, she helped guide that paper to a Pulitzer Gold Medal for Public Service in 1976. More recently, she served as editor of the Christian Science Monitor from 1983 to 1988.
She is an Adjunct Professor of Journalism at the Boston University School of Journalism and a former Fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics. She also serves on the boards of numerous media and civic organizations, including the Center for Foreign Journalists, the Institute for Journalism Education, the Kettering Foundation, the Institute for Global Ethics, the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
A graduate of Smith College, she lives in Boston with her husband, Amos C. Matthews.
Prior to moving to Chicago in 1989 as president of the MacArthur Foundation, one of the nation's largest philanthropic foundations, Simmons was president of Hampshire College in Amherst. She has been as Affiliated board member since 1981.
Affiliated Publications is the parent company of Globe Newspaper Company, publisher of The Boston Globe. All Affiliated directors are also directors of Globe Newspaper Company.
