AFA BOARD FIRM ON OPPOSITION TO HOMOSEXUALS IN THE MILITARY

ARLINGTON, Va, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- At its winter meeting in Orlando, Fla., the board of directors of the Air Force Association repeated its strong opposition to lifting the ban on homosexuals in the military.
"We urge all Association members to work at the grass roots level," said O.R. Crawford of Austin, Texas, AFA's chairman of the board. "We have 191,000 members in nearly 350 chapters around this country and overseas. We are asking them to make their views known emphatically to their representatives in Congress, local community leaders, the news media and the Clinton administration."
The board expressed its total agreement with the Jan. 29 statement of AFA President James M. McCoy of Omaha, Neb., who warned that the Clinton administration is on a "disaster course," one that would undermine the military effectiveness, cohesion and morale of our armed forces. "Open admission of homosexuals to military service would do great harm, more than the President may realize," McCoy said.
The board praised Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the service chiefs for taking a hard stand against lifting the ban. The board also urged all Americans to work with the Congress and the new administration in an effort to oppose any changes to the Department of Defense policy of mandatory separation of homosexuals from the military.
The Air Force Association is an independent non-profit aerospace organization whose objective is to promote greater understanding of aerospace and national defense issues. AFA is a grass-roots organization with a membership of nearly 200,000. The Air Force Association was incorporated in the District of Columbia on Feb. 6, 1946.
