AETNA ELECTS FRANKLIN TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Barbara Hackman Franklin, secretary of commerce in the Bush administration, today was elected as a director of Aetna Life & Casualty (NYSE: AET) at the monthly meeting of the board of directors.
Franklin, 52, was a member of Aetna's board from 1979 to 1992, until her confirmation by the Senate.
"Barbara Hackman Franklin is a person of extraordinary talent with a record of outstanding contribution to our board's decision making," said Ronald E. Compton, Aetna chairman. "We are delighted to have her back on the board."
Franklin served as both commissioner and vice chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1973-79. Prior to that, she directed a program to bring women into high-ranking positions in government for President Richard Nixon.
In the early 1980s she directed the Government and Business Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. In 1984 she founded Franklin Associates, a management consulting firm in Washington, D.C.
In 1989 President Bush appointed Franklin a public delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. Prior to her tenure as Secretary of Commerce, she sat on the federal Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.
Franklin was one of the first women to earn an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Business School. She earned her bachelor's degree at Pennsylvania State University.
She is considered a leading expert on corporate auditing practices. In 1992 the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants presented her the prestigious John J. McCloy award, the first non-accountant so honored. The American Management Association named her one of the nation's 50 most influential corporate directors in 1990.
