AETNA APPOINTS MICHAEL C. ALEXANDER, VICE PRESIDENT, CORPORATE PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Aetna (NYSE: AET) today announced the appointment of Michael C. Alexander as vice president, corporate public involvement (CPI), and vice president and executive director of the Aetna Foundation.
In this position, Alexander will direct Aetna's charitable contributions, grants to non-profit organizations, and socially responsive investments. He succeeds Sanford Cloud Jr., who recently announced his decision to leave Aetna after 15 years to join a Hartford law firm.
In making today's announcement, Aetna Chairman Ronald E. Compton said, "Aetna has been, and remains, committed to playing a vigorous, socially responsive role in communities where we live and work. We are delighted to have Michael Alexander take the helm of our philanthropic programs. I know he will ensure that our business and charitable operations remain dedicated to the betterment of the communities we serve."
The Aetna Foundation is an independent charitable organization, funded solely by the Aetna Life And Casualty Company. During 1991 the foundation disbursed $9.4 million. Aetna's CPI unit made an additional $3.7 million in corporate grants. Aetna's corporate philanthropy is focused on two major programs: child immunization and higher education for minority students.
Since March 1989, Alexander has been the regional vice president for Aetna's affiliate, Human Affairs International (HAI), which develops, and provides employee assistance and managed health programs for companies. In that position he was responsible for marketing, planning, staffing and business decisions for HAI's southern region centered in Atlanta. Alexander also served as director of HAI's Philadelphia office and as HAI's IBM contract manager based in Arlington, Va.
Before joining HAI in April 1984, Alexander was director of outpatient services, Charles R. Drew Community Mental Health Center. Prior to that, he served as chief social worker for the West Philadelphia Consortium. For a year beginning in 1988, Alexander left Aetna to serve as a director of human resources for Unisys.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alexander earned a B.A. from Lewis University in Lockport, Ill., and an M.S.S. from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. He is relocating to the Hartford area with his wife, Sylvia, and their three children.
