AEROVOX TO LEASE PLANT IN MEXICO

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Aerovox Incorporated (NASDAQ: ARVX), announces that its board of directors, during its Aug. 12 meeting, authorized the company to lease a 100,000 square foot plant in Juarez, Mexico. The building, which is under construction and expected to be completed early in the second quarter of 1994, will be occupied by Aerovox de Mexico on a long term lease. It will replace the 45,000 square foot building that Aerovox de Mexico currently occupies.
The larger manufacturing facility is needed to serve new markets in Mexico and accommodate production of capacitors that Aerovox does not currently build because of their high labor content. "Now that we are operating in Mexico, we have identified new markets in Central and South America that have potential for $5,000,000 to $8,000,000 in sales. That factor, combined with strong markets in the U.S. for some new products we will produce in Mexico because of their high labor content, makes this larger facility a necessary venture for Aerovox," President Clifford Tuttle noted.
Since Aerovox de Mexico was established earlier this year, production of EMI filters which were formerly built under contract at two separate locations in Mexico has been consolidated into the Aerovox de Mexico operation, and production of dry metallized polypropylene capacitors moved from New Bedford to that facility.
Aerovox is the leading manufacturer of wound capacitors in North America. Aerovox products include AC, DC film, Power and Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors, as well as EMI filters which are used primarily in AC power supplies for electronic equipment. Capacitors are basic electrical components that store electrical energy and regulate the frequency, timing and condition of electrical signals.
