AEROVOX TO DEVELOP NEXT GENERATION CAPACITORS
FOR U.S. ARMY ELECTROMAGNETIC ARMAMENT TECHNOLOGY
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Aerovox Incorporated (NASDAQ-NMS: ARVX) has announced that the company has reached an agreement with FMC Corporation, Naval Systems Division, to develop the next generation high energy density pulse discharge capacitors for an Electromagnetic Armament System (EMAS) that FMC is developing for the U.S. Army. The agreement is preliminary to a subcontract, expected to be in place early in January, for the design and manufacture of capacitors over a five year period for approximately $5 million.
As a subcontractor, Aerovox will be a part of a team assembled by FMC to advance electromagnetic (EM) gun technology beyond its current state and to develop the critical components for an advanced technology demonstration test bed. The technology will require a substantial reduction in the size of the capacitors used in the system: Aerovox will develop the technology to increase the capacitor energy density from current state-of-the-art values of 1.5 Joules per gram to values greater than 15 Joules per gram, an increase of 10 times current values.
Aerovox is a leading manufacturer of AC and Pulse Power DC capacitors, basic electrical components that store electrical energy and regulate the frequency, timing and condition of electrical signals. The company's AC capacitors are sold primarily to original equipment manufacturers of air conditioners, HID and fluorescent lighting and microwave ovens. Aerovox also manufactures DC film capacitors for telecommunications and electronic applications, and EMI filters used to protect electronic and electromechanical equipment from electrical interference as well as industrial power factor correction capacitors and systems.
