AEROVOX COMMENTS ON EXPECTED THIRD QUARTER

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Clifford H. Tuttle, chairman of the board and president of Aerovox Incorporated (NASDAQ: ARVX), stated today that orders from air conditioning customers, are not as robust at this time as the company anticipated. As a result, Tuttle cautions that, "Aerovox may t? achieve the third quarter earnings that some analysts have been projecting." However, Tuttle also noted that, "customers in our major markets -- appliances, air conditioning and lighting -- report very strong production plans for the last part of the year and into 1994. Accordingly, we are confident the current softness in orders is a temporary situation."
While the company's subsidiary in the United Kingdom is still struggling to contribute to the bottom line, Tuttle said that sales by the recently acquired subsidiary are up and profitability should follow shortly. In Mexico, where expenses related to the start-up of the newly- founded Aerovox de Mexico have been greater than anticipated and productivity lower than planned, a new general manager with substantial start-up and manufacturing experience, has been hired to bring that operation up to profitability goals.
For the third quarter of 1992, Aerovox earned 5 cents per share of revenues of $15.5 million. Revenues for the third quarter 1993 will be in excess of revenues reported in the year-earlier period. Final results for the quarter will be reported on Nov. 1, 1993.
Aerovox is the leading manufacturer of wound capacitors in North America. Aerovox products include AC, DC film, Power and Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors, as well as EMI filters. Capacitors are basic electrical components that store electrical energy and regulate the frequency, timing and condition of electrical signals.
