AEROMEXICO LANDS AEROPERU

HOUSTON, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Aeromexico's flight plan for expansion into key international markets gained momentum today with the announcement by Aeromexico President Alfonso Pasquel that the airline has been successful in its $54 million bid to acquire Aeroperu, the national airline of Peru.
Citing the acquisition as "more solid evidence of Aeromexico's growing strength as a major economic force in international air travel," Pasquel noted that the consortium, which successfully completed negotiations between the two airlines, was comprised of Aeromexico stockholders and a group of Peruvian investors. Members of the consortium, along with key airline industry analysts, he said, expressed confidence that Aeromexico's own successful experience with privatization will prove invaluable in turning Aeroperu toward more profitable growth in the future.
While the consortium will hold 70 percent of Aeroperu's stock, the Peruvian government 20 percent, and Aeroperu's employees 10 percent, Aeromexico will set the tone for day-to-day operations at Aeroperu. "This," Pasquel explained, "will quickly bring Aeroperu's modern fleet up to Aeromexico's state-of-the-art standards, internationally recognized as among the airline industry's most demanding."
 The Aeromexico-Aeroperu Link Makes
 Horizons Brighter for Both Airlines
Both passenger and cargo traffic for both airlines should register significant increases as a result of the new relationship between Aeromexico and Aeroperu, and destinations on Aeroperu's route system stand to enjoy improved service in the coming years. These include: Bogota, Colombia; Caracas, Venezuela; Quito, Ecuador; Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Additionally, even though Aeroperu has not exercised its landing rights for destinations like Vancouver, Montreal, Panama, Rome and Madrid, those rights all have inherent value.
In commenting on the importance of the acquisition to Aeromexico's continuing growth, Pasquel paid tribute to the efforts of Gerardo de Prevoisin, Aeromexico's chairman of the board. "Mr. de Prevoisin has been the architect behind Aermexico's great growth, both domestically and internationally," he said.
Pasquel concluded by pointing out that Aeromexico's expansion has been running as smoothly as the airline's flight schedule, where it has achieved one of the highest on-time performance ratings in commercial air travel history.
