AER LINGUS RETURNS ELITE GROUP OF WORLD WAR II
 HEROES TO NORTHERN IRELAND
NEW YORK, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Sept. 22, 1992, not a historical date for many but a date when Aer Lingus, Ireland's national airline, participated in bringing back Darby's Rangers, a special group of American World War II veterans, to their original base in Northern Ireland.
Darby's Rangers, an elite group of America's bravest, was formed in Northern Ireland for special duties during World War II. This special commando unit, with 175 survivors to date, was one of the first of many "Special Units" that exist within the ranks of the U.S. Army. During the Second World War over 200,000 American servicemen and women were based in the scenic countryside of Northern Ireland, before departing for combat on the war-front.
Aer Lingus, in cooperation with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, has organized the transportation of 27 of this special group back to Carrickfergus, a small town that served as their temporary home nearly half a century ago.
On Sept. 25, 1992, the Carrickfergus Heritage Center will be the new home of a permanent exhibition being dedicated to honor Darby's Rangers. The Rangers will present their Irish hosts with memorabilia from glory days that will remain in the Museum as a permanent monument to the unit's history and the role Carrickfergus played in its formation.
The week for the group started with a reception at JFK Airport, sponsored by Aer Lingus and then followed by a nostalgic flight to Ireland. As they landed in Ireland to a warm welcome, their arrival was recorded by a U.S. Public Television crew which will remain with the group for most of their stay to record the highlights of the ceremonies that are planned in their honor.
