 ADVISORY 2: UPDATED INFORMATION ON
'CHEVRON SKY' OIL SPILL AS OF 4:30 P.M. PST
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Oil from the "Chevron Sky" spill on San Francisco Bay is now east of Alcatraz Island, having drifted with the tide from an area just south of the Bay Bridge.
Earlier estimates of quantity have turned out to be low, Skimmers cleaning up the spill have recovered about 3 barrels of oil (1 barrel equals 42 gallons), and cleanup workers estimate approximately five more barrels of oil may still be on the water.
Some 40 people are involved in cleanup operations, including representatives of the Clean Bay cleanup cooperative and Chevron Shipping Co. As of 4:30 this afternoon, cleanup activities continue with five boats and crews, including two skimmers. The boats' activities are being directed by a helicopter flying over the area.
The oil spilled at about 11 last night from the "Chevron Sky," located just off Hunter's Point at an area known as Anchorage 9.
Chevron immediately noticed and reported the spill to the Coast Guard. At first, the vessel's crew thought the spill was extremely small -- in the 1 gallon range. Clean Bay already was standing by the vessel as part of normal procedure, and cleanup operations were immediately begun.
Clean Bay sent two additional vessels at 2:30 a.m. to assist with the cleanup, which continued throughout the night. After daybreak, the Coast Guard and Chevron received reports that the spill was larger.
A sheen from the spill now measures about 2,000 by 600 feet, with a much smaller portion of that area containing streaks of actual oil. No oil has reached shore, and the cleanup efforts are directed to containing the oil within booms and skimming it before it can reach shore.
In the event that overnight tides carry any oil to nearby Angel Island or Treasure Island, cleanup crews will be on those islands at daybreak.
The spill is under investigation, with Chevron personnel cooperating with Coast Guard officials to determine the cause.
