 ADVISORY: UPDATED INFORMATION ON
'CHEVRON SKY' OIL SPILL IN SAN FRANCISCO BAY
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Cleanup equipment and personnel from Chevron, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Clean Bay cleanup cooperative are on the scene of the "Chevron Sky" working to assess the extent of a small oil spill on the Bay and clean up the oil as quickly as possible.
The Sky is located just off Hunter's Point at an area known as Anchorage 9. The spill is located just south of the Bay Bridge.
Chevron first noticed and immediately reported the spill to the Coast Guard at 11 p.m. last night. At first, the vessel's crew thought the spill was extremely small -- in the 1 gallon range. Clean Bay already was standing by the vessel as part of normal procedure, and cleanup operations were immediately begun.
Clean Bay sent two additional vessels at 2:30 a.m. to assist with the cleanup, which continued throughout the night. After daybreak, the Coast Guard and Chevron received reports that the spill was larger. The current estimate is that the spill is 30 to 40 gallons of fuel oil, or approximately one barrel.
As of 2:45 this afternoon, cleanup activities continue with five boats and crews, including the Clean Bay I, the Clean Bay II and three skimmers. The boats' activities are being directed by two helicopters flying over the area to identify the location and extent of the oil.
A sheen from the spill measures 2,000 by 600 feet, with a much smaller portion of that area containing actual oil. No oil has reached shore, and the cleanup efforts are directed to containing the oil within booms and skimming it before it can reach shore.
The spill is under investigation, with Chevron personnel cooperating with Coast Guard officials to determine the cause.
