ADVANCED TISSUE SCIENCES NAMES GAIL R. WILENSKY, PH.D., TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 LA JOLLA, Calif., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Tissue Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ATIS) today announced the appointment of Gail R. Wilensky, Ph.D., to a new position as a member of the board of directors of the company. Wilensky recently served in the Bush Administration as Deputy Assistant to the President for Policy Development. Prior to her tenure in the White House, Wilensky served as the Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in the Department of Health and Human Services.
 "Dr. Wilensky is a nationally recognized expert on health policy and financing. Her experiences will provide an invaluable resource for guiding important economic decisions pertaining to the cost effectiveness of tissue-engineered products," said Arthur J. Benvenuto, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
 As Deputy Assistant to the President for Policy Development, Wilensky was responsible for advising the President on health and welfare issues. During her position as HCFA Administrator, she directed the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which help pay medical bills for about 60 million elderly, disabled and poor Americans. Wilensky also served as vice president of Health Affairs at Project HOPE, an international health foundation, and she is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. She has also served as a member of the Physician Payment Review Commission and the Health Advisory Committee of the General Accounting Office.
 Wilensky's addition to the board brings the total number of directors to seven. She joins a board composed of the following members: Benvenuto, chairman of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer; Gail K. Naughton, Ph.D., executive vice president and chief operating officer; Jack L. Heckel, president and chief operating officer of GenCorp Inc., a technology-based company with strong positions in aerospace, automotive and related polymer products; John Pappajohn, president and principal stockholder of Equity Dynamics Inc., a financial consulting firm, and the sole owner of Pappajohn Capital Resources, a venture capital firm; David S. Tappan Jr., former chairman and chief executive officer of Fluor Corp., an international engineering, construction and technical services company; and William B. Walsh, M.D., founder of The People- to-People Health Foundation, parent organization for Project HOPE, and vice chairman of Project HOPE.
 Advanced Tissue Sciences is a tissue engineering company engaged in the growth of human tissues and organs for potential therapeutic and laboratory applications.
