ADVANCED INTERVENTIONAL SYSTEMS SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT
TO ACQUIRE SUPPLIER OF FIBER OPTICS
IRVINE, Calif., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Interventional Systems (NASDAQ: LAIS) today announced that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Phoenix-based Polymicro Technologies Inc. (PTI), a supplier of high performance tubing, fibers and related products used primarily in the laser angioplasty and gas chromatography and separations markets. Advanced Interventional Systems utilizes the fiber optic products manufactured by PTI in its Dymer 200+ excimer laser angioplasty system recently approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of heart disease.
According to LAIS' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert E. Wall, the acquisition will provide LAIS direct access to a major supplier of materials critical to the manufacture of the LAIS fiber optic catheters.
"PTI has consistently provided LAIS with excellent quality fiber optic materials used in its disposable catheters designed to debulk diseased arteries in the heart. Through the proposed acquisition, we will have increased access to PTI's leading fiber optic technologies which will enable LAIS to continue to differentiate its laser catheter products," he said.
According to Wall, in addition to producing medical fiber used in angioplasty, PTI is also one of the few remaining independent companies providing tubing to the gas chromatography market. Following the acquisition, PTI will operate as an independent subsidiary of LAIS and will continue to provide products to the gas chromatography and separations markets.
"PTI has a long history of innovation with its chromatography and separations customers and will remain committed to the ongoing supply of its customers with innovative products to help grow these markets," Wall said.
PTI, which had revenues of approximately $6.8 million in its fiscal year ended July 31, 1991, recently began shipping a higher temperature, higher pressure chromatography product that has been well received by PTI customers. PTI's largest customer in the rapidly growing medical products business is LAIS.
According to Wall, based on PTI's past history of profitability, it is anticipated that the proposed acquisition will be non-dilutive to the earnings per share for LAIS' current stockholders. The alliance will provide both companies the opportunity to improve manufacturing efficiencies and to combine their technical expertise to develop future products, he said.
PTI and LAIS expect to complete the acquisition no later than July 15, 1992.
Advanced Interventional Systems pioneered excimer laser angioplasty and is the technological leader in the development of laser systems for cardiovascular
applications. The company was founded in 1986. In

November 1991, Advanced Interventional Systems completed its initial public offering, and on Jan. 31, 1992, it received the first and only approval, to date, from the FDA to market the first laser system designed to treat heart disease.
