ADT SECURITY SYSTEMS OFFERS ADVICE ON SELECTING A REPUTABLE HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

SEATTLE, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ADT Security Systems today issued the following release:
One in every six homes in the United States will be burglarized this year, the FBI estimates. Almost half of these burglaries will be committed during the day.
With the arrival of summer, the days are longer and the excitement of vacations and outdoor activity tends to outweigh the priority of home security.
ADT Security Systems suggests to consumers the importance of finding a reputable company for their home security needs. Consumers also need to be aware of phone and door-to-door inquiries from any "home security" representative.
"It's okay to talk to a home security company as long as precautions are taken to identify the caller as legitimate," said Jeff Baxter of ADT Security Systems of Western Washington. "Get a phone number and ask to call them back making sure it's a security company that's calling."
According to the Washington State Crime Prevention Association, when selecting an alarm system company, questions to ask include:
-- Is the firm established, with a history of performance and service?
-- Does the alarm company have insurance to cover the cost of any damage to your property caused by the company during installation of the system?
-- Are the company and installers properly licensed and bonded? Is anything subcontracted (installation, service or monitoring)?
-- Is the alarm company a member of the Washington Burglary and Fire Alarm Association (800-248-9272)?
-- Is the system equipped with a battery back-up? Is the battery rechargeable?
-- Does the company offer a written guarantee? What is guaranteed and for how long? Are parts and labor covered?
ADT recommends answering these additional questions before buying an alarm system:
-- Where can you find the company? (This should be important because the average household moves every six years.)
-- Is the company local? Who does its monitoring, installations, service and billing? (ADT provides all these services, by ADT employees only, from its local office in downtown Seattle.)
-- Are they fully UL-listed? (ADT is fully AA rated and has a UL- listed Customer Service Center in the state of Washington. ADT meets or exceeds UL's strict requirements for alarm monitoring.)
-- Whom do they protect? (ADT protects anyone -- single-family homes, apartments and condos.)
-- Do they ask questions about your lifestyle, concerns, incidents, pets, etc.? Are they interested in protecting a building or protecting your home and family?
-- Who owns the systems? (ADT offers a customer-owned or an ADT- owned system, not offered by most competitors.)
ADT realizes that the best protection is prevention. To support this claim, ADT is offering a free personal guide to home security. "Safe at Home," prepared and published by ADT, is meant to help residents protect their home by showing them what can be done to increase safety and security.
Contributing significant knowledge to "Safe at Home," is Frank Ivory. For the past several years, Ivory has been a counselor to juvenile delinquents, problem teenagers and young offenders. Previously, he had traveled the road of many drug addicts to burglary and break-in, taking him into over 4,000 homes in towns and suburbs...and into Sing Sing, Dannemora and Attica State Prison.
