ADC TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND TELECT ANNOUNCE SETTLEMENT

MINNEAPOLIS, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- William J. Cadogan, president and chief executive officer of ADC Telecommunications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADCT) of Minneapolis, and Bill Williams, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Telect Inc. of Spokane, Wash., announced today that they have agreed to settle the patent and antitrust lawsuit between their companies.
The lawsuit involved Telect's patent number 4,815,104, issued in March 1989, which covers certain features of a digital cross-connection device used for monitoring, testing, and repairing telecommunications systems. In March 1991, ADC filed suit against Telect in federal court in Minnesota challenging the validity of Telect's patent and alleging unfair competition. Telect filed a counterclaim alleging patent infringement, monopolization, price discrimination, and other claims against ADC.
The terms of the settlement provide for Telect to license the '104 patent to ADC in exchange for a royalty to be paid to Telect and an undisclosed payment by ADC. All other claims of both parties are resolved in this settlement.
Cadogan and Williams stated their belief that this settlement is in the best interest of each of their companies and will allow them both to direct their attention and resources towards serving their customers and the telecommunications industry.
