ADAMS PACKING COMPANY FORMS JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP CITRUS PRODUCTS FOR JAPANESE MARKET

LAKELAND, Fla., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Adams Packing Association today announced it has formed a joint venture with Marugen Inryo Industry Co., Ltd. of Tokyo to produce and distribute citrus beverage products for the Japanese market.
The joint venture, called Adams Japan, Inc., takes advantage of Japan's liberalized regulations for importing citrus products, which went into effect April 1. Adams Japan, Inc. will provide orange and grapefruit juice concentrates, and single-strength juice for remanufacturing to the Japanese food service industry. The company will also develop specialty citrus products and preparation techniques.
"We plan to be the primary citrus supplier from Florida to the Japanese market," said Toshiyuki Abe, chief executive officer of Adams Japan, Inc., and president of Marugen Inryo Industry Co., Ltd. "Our companies have been working together for the past year to exchange information and conduct market research. The import liberalization allows us to move forward with our plans."
Adams Japan, Inc. is headquartered in Auburndale, outside of Lakeland, and is a Florida corporation. The company's Tokyo office will handle direct marketing in Japan.
"With this partnership, we combine Adams Packing Association's 65 years of experience in the citrus juice business with Marugen Inryo's unique technical work in Japan," said Bob Roy, chief operating officer for Adams Japan, Inc. and president of Adams Packing Association. "Adams Japan will provide the growing Japanese institutional and retail market with Florida-quality citrus."
The Japanese market potential for citrus juice products annually is over 260 million gallons of juice. "By the year 2000, we expect the market to increase by well over 200 percent," Abe said.
Adams Japan, Inc. will begin distributing products in Japan in January 1993.
Marugen Inryo Industry is known for innovation in the citrus juice market in Japan. With the help of Adams Packing Association in 1988, the company introduced the post-mix juice dispenser system to the institutional market in Japan. As a result, Japanese consumers have been enjoying the same flavorful taste of orange and grapefruit juices as people in the United States, Abe said.
