ADAMS EXPRESS COMPANY REPORTS NET ASSET VALUE

 NEW YORK, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Adams Express Company today reported the net asset value of the company at Sept. 30, 1993, compared with that a year earlier, as shown in the table below.

 (A) -- After capital gain distributions of $0.04 per share paid in March 1993.
 For the 12 months ended Sept. 30, according to Indata's figures, total return on Adams Express net asset value, after adjusting for income dividends as well as the capital gain distributions paid, was 15.5 percent. Comparable figures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor's Index of 500 Stocks were 12.0 percent and 13.0 percent, respectively.
 For the nine months ended Sept. 30, according to Indata's figures, total return on Adams Express net asset value, after adjusting for income dividends as well as the capital gain distributions paid in 1993, was 7.1 percent. Comparable figures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor's Index of 500 Stocks were 10.1 percent and 7.6 percent, respectively.
 Securities Transactions
 During the three months ended Sept. 30, 1993, the Adams Express Company added seven new names to its portfolio list with the purchases of Bank of New Hampshire Corp., Capital Guaranty Corp., Procter & Gamble Co., QuickResponse Services, Inc., Riverwood International Corp., Verifone, Inc., and Victoria Bankshares, Inc. Additions were made to the existing portfolio holdings of Alexander & Alexander Services, Inc., Vons Cos., Inc., and Weyerhaeuser Co.
 Seven issues were eliminated from the investment list with the sales of Albertson's, Inc., Bruno's Inc., CSX Corp., Colgate-Palmolive Co., Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc., Engelhard Corp. and Schering-Plough Corp.
 Reductions were made in the holdings of American Greetings Corp., Empresa Nacional de Electricidad, S.A. ADR, and Medco Containment Services, Inc.
