ACUSON REPORTS 4TH QUARTER AND YEAR-END RESULTS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Acuson Corp. (NYSE: ACN), a leading manufacturer and international marketer of premium quality medical diagnostic ultrasound systems, today announced the results for the fiscal year and fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992.
Earnings per share were $1.08 for 1992, compared to $1.59 for 1991. Net income for 1992 was $36,806,000, compared to $58,522,000 in the prior year. Net 1992 sales totaled $342,832,000, while net sales for 1991 were $336,275,000.
For the fourth quarter of 1992, earnings per share were 20 cents, compared to 42 cents per share in 1991. Fourth quarter net income totaled $5,928,000, compared to fourth quarter 1991 net income of $15,495,000. Net sales for 1992 were $83,633,000, compared to $89,865,000 reported for the prior-year period.
"Acuson's financial performance for the fourth quarter and full year were adversely affected by a persistently weak worldwide economy and a soft demand for medical diagnostic ultrasound equipment," said Samuel H. Maslak, Sc.D., company president and chief executive officer.
"While our 1992 earnings were lower than we achieved in 1991, Acuson remains committed to its aggressive investments in worldwide field operations and product development," said Maslak. "These programs will continue to impact our earnings in 1993."
During 1992, the board of directors authorized the repurchase of up to 8,000,000 shares of Acuson common stock over an unspecified period of time. Acuson may make repurchases from time to time in the open market or through selected block purchases. As of Dec. 31, the company had repurchased 5,957,000 shares, and there were 29,818,754 shares of Acuson common stock outstanding.
Headquartered in Mountain View, Acuson is a leading manufacturer of medical diagnostic ultrasound systems, which are marketed worldwide through direct, subsidiary and independent distributor sales organizations.
