ACUSON ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURING

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Acuson Corp. (NYSE: ACN) announced today that it is restructuring operations to respond to current world market demands for medical ultrasound products. As a result, the company will reduce its worldwide work force by approximately 250 persons, representing about 15 percent of total employees.
"During the last decade, strong acceptance of Acuson's ultrasound technology in the world ultrasound market produced growth from 50 employees to about 1,750 people," said Samuel H. Maslak, Sc.D., president and chief executive officer. "In particular, we increased employment significantly in the past two years in anticipation of serving customers in a fast-growing market. Now, like many hospitals, we are adjusting employment levels until the uncertainties caused by the recession, slow market conditions and the pending U.S. health care reform are clarified," he said.
The company reported separately that its new Acoustic Response Technology and new XP/4 mid-range color Doppler system have been enthusiastically received during their recent preview to physicians around the world. "I believe these new products, together with our restructured organization, position us well to take advantage of the significant long term opportunities in the ultrasound market," said Maslak. "We are also continuing our aggressive new product development efforts as planned in order to build for the future," he said.
The company also announced that it will incur a restructuring charge of approximately $12,000,000 pre-tax during the second quarter of 1993 to provide for severance payments and other costs associated with the restructuring. The company now expects to incur a loss for the second quarter that ends July 3, 1993.
Headquartered in Mountain View, Acuson is a leading manufacturer of medical diagnostic ultrasound systems, which are marketed worldwide through direct, subsidiary and independent distributor sales organizations.
