ACTIVISION ANNOUNCES LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH 3DO

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Activision Inc., a leading developer of interactive entertainment products, has signed a licensing agreement with The 3DO(TM) Co. as a developer and supplier of compact disc-based software, according to Robert A. Kotick, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Activision.
The agreement calls for Activision to produce interactive entertainment software for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer(TM), the company's advanced interactive compact disc player. Featuring breakthrough processing technology that will create a new consumer electronics standard, the Multiplayer is based on a revolutionary graphics/animation architecture, processes images at 50 times the speed of conventional personal computers and video games machines, and creates realistic three-dimensional graphics and animation using the techniques of Hollywood.
"3DO and Activision are a natural fit," said Kotick. "Activision is producing interactive entertainment in collaboration with Hollywood that delivers feature film-quality production and entertainment values. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer will create an ideal platform for our titles and will enable us to deliver a truly amazing entertainment experience."
According to Kotick, 3DO's license agreement is attractive to software developers because it offers low fees for creating and marketing CD-based software for the Interactive Multiplayer as well as other incentives. 3DO also will not publish software -- thereby removing it from competition with its licensees. 3DO partners include AT&T, one of the world's leading communications and computer companies, Time Warner, a leading media and entertainment company, Matsushita, the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer and maker of Panasonic, Quasar, National and Technics products as well as the parent company of MCA Inc., a major entertainment company that includes Universal Studios.
"Our goal is to make 3DO the consumer standard for interactive entertainment, education and information," said Trip Hawkins, president and chief executive officer of 3DO. "3DO technology allows our developers to create the most engaging entertainment experiences available in home entertainment."
Activision's first title for the Interactive Multiplayer, "Return to Zork" will be published by the company's Infocom division and is scheduled for release later this year. The title represents an unprecedented level of collaboration between the computer and motion picture industries and is the result of Activision's close partnership with the entertainment industry.
"Return to Zork" was produced as a motion picture and features full-motion video of numerous well-known actors set against extraordinary computer-generated backgrounds. The title is the sequel to "Zork," the most popular computer text adventure game series of all time.
Activision is a publicly-held developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software for IBM-compatible, Macintosh, Tandy and other computers as well as Nintendo and Sega video game systems. With offices in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Sydney, the company is headquartered at 11440 San Vicente Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90049.
