ACTIVE NOISE AND VIBRATION TECHNOLOGIES INC. AND SRI INTERNATIONAL TEAM TO JOINTLY DEVELOP ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL SOLUTIONS

PHOENIX, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Active Noise and Vibration Technologies Inc. (ANVT) and SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute), Menlo Park, Calif., today announced their intention to establish a partnership to jointly develop and commercialize active noise control solutions for automotive, aerospace and industrial applications.
The ANVT-SRI alliance will pursue multiple opportunities in the active control field, with the first objective being to complete the research and development associated with the commercial production of an actively controlled noise cancellation system to reduce randomly generated road noise for automobiles and light trucks. This type of random noise greatly contributes to noise levels inside a vehicle.
"This alliance brings together two of the most accomplished companies in the field of active noise and vibration control," stated Gary Baxter, vice president of marketing and sales for ANVT. "ANVT has existing repetitive noise solutions for automotive and aerospace applications, and this alliance will allow us to extend these offerings to include random, broadband noise control as well. By merging the specialized expertise of ANVT and SRI, our combined efforts will result in systems of unmatched quality and performance specifically designed to meet the needs of the target markets. In essence, we are advancing the state of active technology to a higher level."
"Active noises and vibration control are technologies of increasing importance to society," added Raul Martinez, director of SRI's Acoustics and Radar Technology Laboratory. "The opportunity to blend our skills with those of ANVT will result in the development of systems that will achieve new levels of quality and efficiency."
The ANVT-SRI partnership will capitalize on the strengths of each party: SRI has cultivated a reputation as one the premiere research organizations in the world, and has refined experience in the application of multichannel active noise control systems to cancel random noise energy in large three-dimensional spaces. ANVT brings scientific and engineering expertise, proprietary active technology, project management resources, advanced commercialization capability and marketing and distribution expertise to the alliance.
Research and development activities will constitute the primary focus of the ANVT-SRI partnership. This work will augment existing ANVT development, manufacturing and distribution alliances for the automotive in-cabin cancellation application with Alpine Electronics Inc. of Japan, Harman International Industries of the United States and the FIAT Group of Italy.
Active control technology suppresses sound or vibration waves through the electronic creation and subsequent broadcast of mirror image anti-waves. When the original waves encounter the computer-created anti-waves, the two "cancel" each other, significantly reducing noise or vibration.
SRI International is recognized as one of the world's leading research, development and consulting organizations. Founded in 1946 as the Stanford Research Institute, its headquarters and principal laboratories are located in Menlo Park, with offices in the United States, Japan, Korea, Singapore, London, Paris and Zurich. SRI's Acoustic and Radar Technology Laboratory has nearly two decades of experience in the development and application of active control technology, principally in aerospace and military applications.
Active Noise and Vibration Technologies Inc. is a recognized world leader in the active control of noise and vibration. Headquartered in Phoenix, with additional research and development facilities in England and Italy, ANVT is involved in the research, development and licensing of active noise and vibration applications. ANVT's patented technologies are utilized in aerospace, industrial, consumer, marine, defense, automotive and other ground-based transportation applications.
