ACTIONTEC INTRODUCES USB/ETHERNET HOME DSL MODEM.

Actiontec Electronics has introduced the new Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities, a cost-effective DSL modem solution for Local Exchange Carriers and Internet Service Providers that also allows end users to connect two PCs to form a home network. The product enables DSL service providers to add value by enabling subscribers to share high-speed Internet access without purchasing two DSL accounts or investing in a separate router.

"This new modem is a strong addition to our DSL product line and a demonstration of our continued leadership in the DSL space," said Dean Chang, Actiontec president and CEO. "At the same time, it lowers the total cost of ownership for DSL service providers by offering competitive pricing, low return rates, and true do-it-yourself installation that reduces the need for technical support."

The Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities combines a full-rate ADSL modem with a built-in router. Two desktop or laptop computers can be networked by plugging into the modem's USB and Ethernet ports, respectively. More computers can be added to the network by connecting a hub to the Ethernet port. Networked machines can share one DSL connection as well as files, printers, other peripherals, and multiplayer games.

The modem ships with Actiontec's exclusive easy-install system, including automated wizards, on-screen pictorial guides, and color-coded ports and cables that simplify DSL and network configuration. These aids minimize technical support calls from end users and problems in the field.

The modem also includes a firewall, Internet service blocking, Web site blocking and full logging support. It supports data rates of up to 8 Mbps downstream and 860 Kbps upstream. It has been tested with all major DSLAMs, each with multiple line cards, and is compliant with all major ADSL standards, including T1.413i2 and G.dmt. It is compatible with any computer built with a RJ45 Ethernet or USB (PC only) port and Web browser, and it is engineered to maximize performance and compatibility at all loop lengths. It also supports a variety of networking and VPN protocols, including NAT, PPPoE (client), DHCP (client, server), DNS (client), as well as L2TP, PPTP and IPSec passthrough.

Other Actiontec products for DSL service providers include the Actiontec USB Home DSL Modem, a full-rate ADSL USB modem that allows users to simultaneously talk and surf the Internet on the same phone line; the Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem (bridge only), which gives users the option of connecting either to a USB or an Ethernet port; and the Actiontec Wireless-Ready DSL Gateway, an ADSL modem with a 4-port 10/100 Mbps Ethernet router and a USB LAN port that can be used to connect five PCs in a wired network. The gateway also features a built-in slot for an 802.11b-compliant PC card that can be used to network computers wirelessly, plus a second PC Card slot for expanded functionality.
