ACME ON LINE WITH MAC POS
ACME ON LINE WITH MAC POS PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Money Access Service, Inc.
(MAC) has added another major retailer to its list of POS clients with the announcement that Acme Markets, Inc. is currently accepting the MAC card for purchases at 145 of its 183 supermarkets throughout the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware region.
Acme said it estimates that all stores will be on-line by late September. According to Ed Spragg, vice president of Sales and Marketing, the roll-out for Acme's debit card system, which also accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover, began several months ago. "We started with our Jersey shore locations, since we felt that vacationers would be eager to take advantage of the convenience of POS," said Spragg. Evaluating the results of POS to date, Spragg said the customers have readily accepted using MAC cards at the point of sale. "POS is becoming so widespread that we found there was virtually no learning curve," he said. "The names Acme and MAC both have a strong and positive record of meeting the needs of consumers," said Donald J. Gleason, senior vice president and MAC Network manager. "We are very pleased our two organizations have joined forces in that ongoing effort." The MAC system currently has 927 participating financial institutions and approximately 18 million cardholders. MAC branded terminals can be found primarily in seven states, including Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The MAC Network is the leading regional ATM network in the nation for switched transactions. It is among the top ATM networks in total transactions, and a leading provider of point-of-sale services, recording more than 50 million transactions per month through 7,957 ATMs, including more than 1 million POS transactions through 10,000 point-of-sale locations. A new joint venture between CoreStates Financial Corp, Banc One Corporation, PNC Financial Corp and Society Corporation, announced on July 22 and expected to be effective by the fourth quarter of 1992, will expand the MAC network's market base to 13,000 ATMs in 16 states, with a monthly switched transaction volume equating to 20 percent of the national switched volume.
