ACME METALS, UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA AGREE TO NEW LABOR AGREEMENTS FOR RIVERDALE AND CHICAGO PLANTS

RIVERDALE, Ill., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Negotiators for Acme Metals Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ACME) and United Steelworkers of America Local Unions 1053 and 1657 last night agreed to new labor contracts covering approximately 1,600 hourly employees at Acme's Chicago and Riverdale operations.
The new contracts, which are subject to member ratification, will run through Aug. 31, 1993.
"We are pleased that our negotiators have reached these agreements, and that now, Acme and its people can focus their full attention on what they do best: producing the finest steel and steel strapping in the country," commented Brian W.H. Marsden, Acme Metals chairman and chief executive officer.
Acme and the United Steelworkers of America had initially attempted to negotiate long-term agreements, and that still is their intention. However, as Marsden explained, unanswered questions related to Acme's proposed investment in a state-of-the-art thin slab continuous caster/hot strip mill complex at the company's Riverdale plant made that difficult.
"We made substantial progress during the negotiations toward long- term agreements. Realistically, though, we found ourselves facing too many `What if' issues concerning the proposed investment, which is still undergoing rigorous study," Marsden noted.
"In light of this, we both felt it best to sign these new contracts and continue discussions toward long-term agreements when more details on the project are finalized," he added.
Acme released no details on the new agreements, pending the ratification vote, which is expected early next week.
Acme Metals Inc., through its operating subsidiaries, is a fully integrated producer of steels, steel strapping and strapping tools, welded steel pipe and tube, and automotive and light truck jacks. Its common stock is traded on NASDAQ's National Market system under the symbol ACME.
