ACME ELECTRIC CORPORATION ANNOUNCES JOINT EFFORT WITH STEELCASE

CUBA, N.Y., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Acme Electric Corporation (NYSE: ACE) announced today that it has consummated a joint marketing and distribution agreement with Steelcase, Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich. Acme Electric's chairman and chief executive officer, G. Wayne Hawk, said that, under the new agreement, Acme would market its SmartWall back-up power system exclusively through Steelcase dealers.
Steelcase is the world's largest manufacturer of modular office- panel systems. SmartWall is installed in wall panels and provides conditioned and battery backed-up power to assure continuous operation of computers, telecommunications devices and other vital equipment in the event of electric utility power disturbances or failures.
Mr. Hawk stated that the joint effort will provide Acme with access to an important and growing segment of the back-up power market. "Until now, manufacturers of back-up power products have largely ignored the wall-panel market," Mr. Hawk said. "Yet architects and facilities managers are increasingly choosing open-floor plans with wall-panel systems to provide a flexible-office environment. The wall-panel systems are used to provide electric power, telecommunications and even ventilation. We, therefore, view this joint venture as an important growth opportunity."
Founded in 1917, Acme Electric Corporation designs and manufactures power conversion products for electronic and electrical systems for industrial, commercial, residential, military and aerospace applications. Corporate headquarters are located in East Aurora, N.Y., with operations in Cuba, N.Y.; Lumberton, N.C.; Tempe, Ariz.; and West Jordan, Utah.
