ACKERLEY POSTS FIRST QUARTER INCREASES IN SALES; ADJUSTED OPERATING PROFIT

SEATTLE, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Ackerley Communications, Inc. (AMEX: AK) announced today that the company's operating results for the quarter ended March 31, 1993 will include increases in sales and adjusted operating profit, as well as a reduction in net loss.
According to Barry Ackerley, chief executive officer of Ackerley Communications, Inc., "Our company's net loss in the first quarter of 1993 is significantly less than the loss posted for the comparable quarter a year earlier. We anticipate this positive trend will continue throughout 1993 and that we will exceed our record breaking earnings of 1992."
Sales for the first quarter (ended March 31, 1993) were $48.2 million, up 1.2 million or 2.6 percent from $47.0 million a year earlier. Sales from ongoing operations increased $1.7 million or 4 percent over the same period last year. Gains in the broadcasting segment, as well as the Seattle SuperSonics accounted for most of the increase.
Adjusted operating profit (defined as net revenue less operating expenses plus other income before depreciation, amortization, interest and gain or loss on the divestiture of assets) -- the "cash flow" by which the company measures its performance -- for the first quarter of 1993 increased to $5.7 million, up 7.3 percent from $5.3 million in 1992.
The company showed a net loss of $2.2 million or 14 cents per share for the first quarter of 1993, compared to net loss of $4.0 million or 26 cents per share, for the comparable quarter in 1992.
