ACER AMERICA TO OEM PROTEON TOKEN RING NETWORK ADAPTER CARDS

 WESTBOROUGH, Mass., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Proteon, Inc. (NASDAQ: PTON), a leading provider of LAN connectivity products, and Acer America Corp., one of the world's largest microcomputer manufacturers, today announced an OEM agreement for Proteon Token Ring network adapter cards.
 Norman Choy, Acer America group product manager, said the alliance with allow Acer America to offer Proteon network adapter cards as an option for a number of its client/server platforms. "We have conducted extensive testing with the Proteon product and found the performance extremely fast and reliable," said Choy. "The Proteon option is an important addition to our product line."
 Under terms of the agreement, Acer America customers purchasing the company's high-end servers will be able to specify Proteon's ProNET-4/16 Plus Series card for the Expanded Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) bus type. Proteon's recently introduced Plus Series cards come with a lifetime warranty and guaranteed interoperability. The cards can also be equipped with Texas Instruments new PacketBlaster LAN accelerator chip that increases performance by 102 percent.
 Robert Otten, Proteon director, OEM sales, said, "We are delighted with the opportunity to work with Acer America. Clearly, Acer is one of the high-performance leaders in providing client/servers for UNIX and Windows NT environments. The integration of Proteon adapter cards should further increase performance and help customers optimize their Token Ring network."
 Proteon's ProNET-4/16 Plus Series cards offer a lifetime warranty, guaranteed interoperability with leading network operating systems, flash-boot memory and software programmable configuration options for easy upgrades and maintenance. To date, more than a half-million Proteon network adapter cards are installed and operating.
 The agreement with Acer America is the fourth such alliance that Proteon has announced in recent weeks. Others included OEM agreements with Zenith Data Systems, Buffalo Grove, Ill., PC COM, Inc., Elmsford, N.Y., and Northgate Computer Corp., Eden Prairie, Minn.
 Acer America Corp., located in San Jose, Calif., is a subsidiary of the Acer Group. Founded in 1976, in Taiwan, The Acer Group has become one of the world's largest microcomputer manufacturers and one of the world's top OEM suppliers. A global company with facilities in more than 70 countries, Acer's R&D, engineering, manufacturing and marketing operations in the U.S. and Canada are handled by Acer America Corp.
