ACE audience to get a close-up version of 'Les Misrables'.

Byline: The Register-Guard

An intimate production of a big Broadway musical opens this weekend in Eugene, while a popular Southern comedy- drama opens in Florence.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Les Misrables

Actors Cabaret of Eugene

Friday through Aug. 10

Actors Cabaret always has specialized in Broadway musicals, but the tiny stage at ACE's downtown theater doesn't exactly lend itself to giant spectacle.

So this production, directed by Joe Zingo with vocal direction by Mark VanBeever, is "re imagined" to focus on the relationships in the classic Victor Hugo tale.

Reimagination has its theatrical advantages, Zingo says.

"When we did 'Cats,' our audiences couldn't get over the fact that even though they had seen the show in other, larger venues, it was the Actors Cabaret production that finally allowed them to fully appreciate the musical for what it was," he said. " 'Les Misrables' presents us with many of the same opportunities."

The cast of 35 includes Tony Joyner as Jean Valjean, Tom Grimsley as Javert, Cindy Kenny as Fantine, Allyson Faber as Cosette and Anthony Coslett as Marius.

Curtain is 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and July 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 and Aug. 2-3 and 9-10. Sunday matinees will be at 2 p.m. July 14 and 21.

Tickets are $16 to $27, $41.95 for dinner and the show, at 541-683-4368 and actorscabaret.org/tickets. The theater is at 996 Willamette St.

Steel Magnolias

Florence Playhouse

Friday through July 21

Curtain is 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through July 21. Tickets are $10 at 541-997-1675.

The Florence Playhouse is at 208 Laurel St., Florence.
