ACCESS HEALTH REPORTS FOURTH QUARTER AND ANNUAL RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Access Health Marketing, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACCS) today reported increased revenues for the fourth quarter, ended Sept. 30, 1993, of $6.5 million, up 103 percent from $3.2 million in 1992. Included in the revenue increase was $2.2 million of product development funding from Personal Health Management, LP under a previously announced development agreement. This funding reimbursed the company for expenditures incurred in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 1993 related to its product and market development activities for the managed care marketplace. Revenues excluding product development funding were $4.3 million, up 35 percent from the prior year. These revenues included $331,000 from managed care pilot program operations during the quarter.
Net income of $203,000 was down 37 percent from $320,000 in the prior year period, reflecting the company's strategy of investing in expanded capacity to accommodate the anticipated growth of its products for the managed care market. The fourth quarter results also reflect a reduction of the income tax rate,
partially as a result of lower state taxes than previously estimated. Net income per share was $0.03 compared to $0.05 in 1992.
"Access Health continues to make significant investments in building capacity and delivery systems to aggressively position the company as the leader in personal health management services," said Kenneth B. Plumlee, president and chief executive officer of Access Health Marketing, Inc. "Our managed care clients are experiencing significant results in both cost-efficiencies and improved member satisfaction through the services offered by Access Health. Pilot programs are clearly demonstrating that consumer access to healthcare information reduces costs and helps consumers avoid inappropriate or unnecessary care."
Access Health's 1993 revenues of $18.5 million were up 49 percent from $12.4 million in 1992. Revenues excluding product development funding were $16.3 million, up 31 percent. Net income for 1993 of $1.3 million was down 6 percent from $1.4 million in the previous year. Earnings per share were $0.20 on 13 percent more average shares outstanding during 1993 as a result of the company's initial public offering in February 1992, compared to $0.24 reported last year.
"The introduction of President Clinton's Health Care Plan this fall has impressed upon consumers, insurers and healthcare professionals alike that information is at the heart of the healthcare delivery system," said Plumlee. "The market, however, is not waiting for reform. Innovative managed care organizations are already using consumer information services as a critical component of more cost-effective healthcare delivery systems."
Plumlee cited the example of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon, which began operation in the fourth quarter of a significant pilot program for Access Health's Personal Health Advisor(SM), reaching more than 40,000 members of a potential one million membership base. Additionally, pilot program announced in the fourth quarter with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina and Foundation Health Medical Group, Inc. are now up and running. Access Health's existing pilot programs cover approximately 145,000 lives through sponsors that collectively manage care for approximately five million health plan members. Another key development in the quarter was the expansion and relocation of Access Health's Chicago call center to a larger facility to prepare for anticipated growth.
Access Health's programs and services help managed care organizations, self-insured employers and hospitals improve the quality of care, reduce costs and improve member satisfaction. Its personal health management services include telephone-based health information, prevention and care management programs which are designed to improve patient access and promote individual responsibility for managing health among consumers.
