ACCESS HEALTH MARKETING SIGNS 3-YEAR, $3.6 MILLION AGREEMENT WITH MCI

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Calls to Personal Health Advisor(R) and Ask-A-Nurse(R), two nationally used health care demand management and health information programs offered by Access Health Marketing, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ACCS), are now being carried on the MCI (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) network as part of a three-year, $3.6 million agreement between Access Health and MCI.
Access Health will move to MCI as its dominant carrier in order to use the advanced features of MCI 800 Service to improve its responsiveness and service to clients phoning for information. Based in Sacramento, Access Health is a leading provider of consumer health information and referral programs and services for managed care plans and hospitals.
"It's clearly a very competitive marketplace. The key factors in Access Health's decision to go with MCI were flexibility and aggressive pricing," said Jim Steeb, vice president of Technology Services for Access Health. "Considering how fast we're growing, it is critical for us to be able to make changes at a moment's notice. The savings presented by MCI made this an easier decision."
Specifically, Access Health will utilize MCI 800 Configuration Manager, a direct interface that allows network routing changes, to efficiently and quickly manage its ability to handle calls coming into the firm's various offices.
For example, if heavier-than-anticipated call volume to a single location was impacting the firm's ability to respond to calls, Access Health could instantly reconfigure its network to shift some of its traffic to another office, thereby handling calls faster and more efficiently.
"The scope of MCI's services and the flexibility of our products positioned us well with Access Health," said Robert B. Hartnett, vice president of sales for the western region of MCI Business Services. "We met and exceeded their needs as a fast-growing company, and we were able to provide them with a substantial cost savings."
Access Health also will use MCI Vision, MCI Enhanced Voice Services, MCI Card and private line data services. In addition, MCI's conference calling product, Forum, will enhance communications between Access Health's offices in Sacramento, Chicago, and their newest location in Phoenix.
MCI Business Services, headquartered in Atlanta, provides long distance voice, data and video telecommunications services for the nation's mid-sized and small businesses.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance service provider in the United States and has more than 60 offices worldwide.
