ACCESS HEALTH ENTERS CONTRACTS WITH BLUE CROSS OF CALIFORNIA, PROVIDENT LIFE & ACCIDENT AND CEBCOR

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Access Health Marketing Inc. (NASDAQ: ACCS) today announced it has signed independent agreements with Blue Cross of California, the largest health insurer in the state of California, Provident Life & Accident Insurance Co., a leading national health insurance company, and CEBCOR, a Chicago-based employee leasing company, to provide health care information and care management services to selected members. These contracts add to the company's existing managed care operations, which include a pilot program with Blue Cross of Iowa that was launched in July 1992.
"We are delighted to have such prestigious customers become a part of our managed care vision. We are particularly pleased to be able to work with such innovative organizations to implement our leading edge approach to managing consumer demand for health care services and increasing member satisfaction through our Personal Health Advisor and Access Care Management System," said Kenneth B. Plumlee, president and chief executive officer of Access Health.
In a pilot program scheduled to begin in the company's third fiscal quarter, Access Health will provide its recently introduced Access Care Management System to selected members of the Blue Cross of California and CaliforniaCare Health Plans. Blue Cross provides health benefits for more than 5.4 million individuals throughout California.
The program is designed to improve member satisfaction by providing accurate and timely health information to participating members. Using a toll-free number, members will be able to speak with a registered nurse about their health care concerns 24 hours a day. Specially trained nurse counselors will provide members with health information and nursing assessment to assist them in making the most appropriate and cost-effective medical care decisions.
"Access Health has created an excellent service that we believe will go a long way toward improving the health status of our members by providing them with the information they need to make appropriate health care decisions," said David Pincus, vice president of marketing and communications for Blue Cross of California. "We are looking forward to generating high-impact results with Access Health."
Access Health also announced that it has entered a marketing and distribution agreement with Provident Life & Accident of Chattanooga, Tenn. Provident has scheduled an April launch for the first program under this agreement with a large East Coast employer. Provident will also market Access Health's proprietary Access Care Management System to other insured groups in its customer base, which covers more than 2 million employees.
"We are delighted to be parterning with Access Health in offering our customers a variety of state-of-the-art health information products. We are very encouraged by initial customer response to these products," said Dianne Luby, vice president of medical review services at Provident.
CEBCOR, an employee leasing company that self-insures its health benefits, has contracted with Access Health to provide the Personal Health Advisor to its employees. The program is scheduled for a March launch.
According to Plumlee, these projects are expected to generate combined revenues of at least $600,000 to Access Health during the first year of the contracts. "Based on successful results, there are significant opportunities to expand our relationships with these customers," he added.
In 1992, Access Health announced a new division to develop and market products for the self-insured employer and managed care markets. The company introduced two innovative products, Personal Health Advisor and the Access Care Management System, to expand the company's reach into the estimated $7.5 billion annual health care cost management market. These products provide a broad range of information services to help consumers with every aspect of managing their health care, from education and prevention, to assistance in making informed decisions about using health care services, to aid in selecting physicians and other health care providers.
Access Health programs and services help managed care organizations, self-insured employers and hospitals managed consumer demand for health care services. Its health information, prevention and care management programs are designed to improve patient access, ensure the cost-effective delivery of care, and promote member satisfaction by providing consumers with information they need to make better healthcare decisions and avoid unnecessary or inappropriate care.
