ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES HALL OF FAME PLAZA COMING TO
DISNEY-MGM STUDIOS; MILTON BERLE PRESENT FOR ANNOUNCEMENT
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) has announced that Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park in Florida will be the East Coast home for ATAS' Hall of Fame Plaza, a glorious tribute to TV legends. "Mr. Television" Milton Berle, the Hall of Fame's first inductee, joined ATAS President Leo Chaloukian, Executive Director Dr. James Loper and Disney executives for today's announcement.
From the site of the new plaza, Berle announced the next six legends to be inducted into ATAS' Hall of Fame. TV luminaries Bill Cosby, Andy Griffith, Ted Koppel, producer-director-actor Sheldon Leonard, Dinah Shore and R.E. (Ted) Turner will be the 51st through 56th inductees into the Hall of Fame, founded in 1984. They will be officially inducted into the Academy's Hall of Fame at a gala black-tie ceremony and dinner Oct. 3 at the Walt Disney World Resort as part of an overall Disney media-event weekend.
The Hall of Fame ceremony in future years may be conducted in a similar manner plus the added possibility of it being a nationally televised special.
The Hall of Fame Plaza -- a striking outdoor exhibit modeled after the existing plaza in North Hollywood, Calif., features a 27-foot Emmy Award Statue surrounded by bronze sculptures of such Hall of Fame TV legends as Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar, Carol Burnett, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Mary Tyler Moore and others. The Plaza will be adjacent to the Disney-MGM Studios' popular SuperStar Television attraction.
The agreement contains options that may allow Disney to be involved in numerous other future ATAS-approved Hall of Fame and Academy-related events and induction ceremonies at the Disney-MGM Studios. Disney may elect to install another Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame Plaza at Euro Disney Resort near Paris, with a 1996 projected opening for a Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park there. The relationship could extend further to such other ATAS/Disney-sponsored events as celebrity golf and tennis tournaments.
Said ATAS President Leo Chaloukian: "By involving ourselves with Walt Disney World and possibly beyond, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is internationalizing its Hall of Fame for millions of people across the world to learn more about the legendary stars, talents and shows that have built our television history.
"I'm most proud of the ATAS officers, executive committee members and board of governors who shared this vision with me and our Executive Director James Loper and voted to make it happen," said Chaloukian.
Said Disney-MGM Studios Vice President Bruce Laval: "We are elated that ATAS has chosen Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park as the second location for this wonderful tribute to television and its great artists. This represents a great opportunity to further promote awareness of the contributions and creative genius of the TV industry.
"We're also very excited about being the host venue for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which promises to be the most special occasion of the year in the television industry," said Laval.
