ABT OFFERS SUMMER STUDY IN THE LONE STAR STATE.

American Ballet Theatre dances deep into the heart of Texas with its first Lone Star State-based Summer Intensive, which will be held July 2-27 at the University of Texas at Austin. The workshop is the fourth regional summer program ABT has established outside of New York.

"Austin is definitely the place to be in Texas," said Rebecca Wright, artistic director of ABT's Summer Intensive. "The nature of the city and the university is so vibrant and creative." Wright says ABT had wanted a foothold in Texas for years. The University of Texas was a logical choice because of its spacious facilities.

The Texas workshop will be taught primarily by ABT faculty and supplemented by teachers from the university. Dancers will live in dormitories on campus and participate in a full range of technique classes and auxiliary courses including nutrition, Pilates, work, dance history, acting, and composition. Like all ABT summer programs, the Texas workshop will culminate in a student performance.

ABT founded its first Summer Intensive in New York City in 1997. The first regional intensive began at the Detroit Opera House in 1998 and was soon followed by programs at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles.

Wright says ABT created the regional summer workshops in response to parents' demands for more affordable and accessible summer training outside of New York. The regional workshops have been so successful that about 80 percent of the dancers in ABT's junior company are now selected from regional Summer Intensive participants.

"ABT is continuing to broaden its educational outreach nationwide and establish its identity as 'America's ballet company,'" said Siena Siegel, Summer Intensive manager. "The satellite Summer Intensives allow more students access to our training. Our New York program only accommodates 150 students."

Siegel echoes Wright's enthusiasm for Austin, citing the quality and quantity of the city's dance activity as a determining factor in selecting the site. Also in Texas's capital city, Ballet Austin's professional training program begins its summer workshop in June, followed by the Regional Dance America Craft of Choreographers Conference in August.

"ABT's presence benefits the entire dance community here," said Lucretia Foust, university dance faculty member and Summer Intensive liaison. "We are hoping to link future university dance programs with both ABT and Ballet Austin."
