ABP'S EUROPEAN COMPANY ACQUIRES GERMAN ENVELOPE MANUFACTURER
ATLANTA, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- American Business Products, Inc. (NYSE: ABP) today announced that its joint venture, Curtis 1000 Europe GmbH of Germany, has acquired all the outstanding stock of Neuwieder Couvert Fabrik, a German-based manufacturer of all types of envelopes.
The acquisition was announced by Thomas R. Carmody, president and chief executive officer of ABP, and Ingo Hafner, the joint venture partner of ABP and the previous manager and minority owner of the newly acquired company. The acquisition was a cash transaction.
Neuwieder Couvert Fabrik, which is located in Neuwied, Germany, has sales of approximately $37 million annually. It is the second acquisition by ABP's European joint venture this year and expands the company's presence significantly in the European market.
"With this acquisition, our joint venture, Curtis 1000 Europe, will have sales of approximately $55 million a year and will be one of the largest envelope manufacturers in Europe," Carmody said. "This is a major step in our European expansion strategy and allows us to consolidate operations for greater efficiency, to take advantage of synergies and to broaden our product line with increased capacity."
Curtis 1000 Europe, the joint venture, was already ranked as the largest manufacturer of specialty Tyvek envelopes in Europe.
The ABP joint venture, headquartered in Andernach, Germany, now has facilities in Neuwied, Germany; London, and Luxembourg, with a network of dealers throughout Europe. In February 1991, the joint venture acquired Envelopes International Ltd., a Tyvek envelope manufacturer based in Woodford Green near London.
Curtis Europe was organized in 1984 as a 50-50 joint venture between an ABP subsidiary, Curtis 1000 Inc., and AWA Couvert to product and market Tyvek envelopes, which require a highly specialized production skill.
American Business Products, Inc., which has reported record sales and earnings for the first nine months of 1991, is a leading supplier of forms for computers and other electronic equipment; envelopes and specialty mailers; book printing, and other business supplies, and specialty extrusion coating of papers, films and nonwoven fabrics with 46 production facilities in the continental United States and Hawaii.
