LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- ABC News InterActive and Sony Electronic Publishing Company, together with multimedia developer Haukom Associates, today announced an alliance to co-develop and co-publish an interactive multimedia program tentatively called "Earthquake" for the consumer market.
The companies will share design, development and marketing responsibilities for the new CD-ROM-based multimedia title, targeted for availability in mid-1994.
The new title will make use of extensive film footage from ABC News archives, as well as numerous still photographs from other private and government sources. It will use original maps and animation created by Haukom Associates to give viewers what the partners call "an engrossing" earthquake-related experience.
Additionally, the title will use information from the book Terra Non Firma by James M. Gere and Haresh C. Shah, and will include a survival manual and other information that will help people gain an understanding of -- and prepare their homes for -- earthquakes.
 Partner Synergies
"This is an excellent example of how a partnership can take advantage of the unique strengths of different companies in creating multimedia applications," said Rick Fisher, general manager of Sony Electronic Publishing's Publishers Data Service Corporation division.
"ABC News InterActive has access to some rarely seen film of the major earthquakes of this century, and Haukom Associates is one of the best-known multimedia design groups in the industry.
"For our part, Sony Electronic Publishing will contribute two powerful multimedia software technologies," he said. "One is our full-text search and retrieval database engine that supports hyper linking between text and multimedia objects. The other is a hybrid formatter program that permits the application to run on Macintosh or Windows-based MPC platforms."
 Consumer Market Access
"We are thrilled to be working with Sony Electronic Publishing on this title -- our first CD-ROM for the consumer market," said William Abrams, vice president of business development and marketing at ABC News. "Sony is bringing tremendous value to this relationship with its development resources and licensing expertise, as well as its experience in the consumer market," Abrams said.
"We are pleased to have ABC News InterActive join our family of co-publishers," said Sony Electronic Publishing's Fisher. "ABC News InterActive has been a pioneer in interactive multimedia development, and this association will help speed the development process while improving the overall quality of the end product."
