ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Abbott Laboratories' Ross Products Division today announced at the 1994 American Dietetic Association Annual Meeting, the introduction of a medical nutritional food product designed specifically for people with HIV infection or AIDS.
The new product, ADVERA, "has been clinically shown to provide effective nutritional management for persons with HIV infection or AIDS," according to Art Hecker, Ph.D., vice president of medical nutritional research and development for Ross.
One aspect of HIV infection or AIDS is progressive weight loss, commonly referred to as the wasting syndrome. In a six month study conducted in Los Angeles, participants receiving ADVERA better maintained body weight compared to those receiving a leading nutritional supplement. In addition, the number of patients requiring hospitalizations was fewer.
ADVERA, which has a patent pending, is a nutritionally complete medical food product developed by researchers at the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories to specifically meet the commonly recognized unique dietary requirements of people with HIV infection or AIDS. It is high in protein and calories, with a patented specialized protein system. ADVERA contains high levels of key vitamins commonly deficient in this population, in addition to beta-carotene, and fish oil high in n-3 fatty acid. It is low in fat and contains fiber to help maintain bowel function. ADVERA has been shown to be well tolerated both as a supplemental and total feeding.
ADVERA will be available in many U.S. pharmacies beginning Nov. 1. ADVERA should be used under the supervision of a physician. It comes in 8-fl-oz. cans in either chocolate or orange cream flavor. It can be taken orally or by enteral tube and can be used as a sole source of nutrition, meal replacement or meal supplement. As a supplement, recommended serving for complete nutritional benefits is two or three 8-fl-oz. cans per day.
Abbott Laboratories has supported AIDS research for over a decade. The company introduced the first screening test of AIDS in 1985 and today is a leading supplier of AIDS screening and diagnostic tests. Abbott provides medically advanced nutritionals and therapies for AIDS patients and has ongoing R&D programs in both diagnostic and therapeutic areas.
Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) is a worldwide manufacturer of health care products employing 49,000 people. In 1992, the company's sales and net earnings were $7.9 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, with earnings per share of $1.47.
