ABB UNIT RECEIVES $70 MILLION TVA AWARD
STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In the largest ever wet

scrubber retrofit project in the United States, Asea Brown Boveri Inc. (ABB) announced today that its ABB Environmental Systems unit has received a $70 million award from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The award is for the design and supply of two flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems at the 2650 MW Cumberland Fossil Plant in Cumberland City, Tenn.
The project team includes ABB, TVA and United Engineers and Constructors (UE&C), an architect/engineer based in Philadelphia. Commercial operation of the two 1325 MW units is scheduled for early 1995. As a result of this award, ABB, TVA and UE&C will collaborate on the Cumberland Project through overall project goals, bonus/penalty sharing and risk sharing.
The agreement also calls for the implementation of a total quality process to ensure that the system meets or exceeds the expectations of TVA. Through this unique partnering arrangement, used by ABB in other industries it serves, common project goals will be established and the three entities will optimize design, reduce cost and execute the project in a timely manner.
ABB Environmental Systems will carry out the project, supplying TVA with wet limestone forced oxidation systems designed to remove 95 percent of the facility's sulfur dioxide emissions. A dedicated project team will be located in Philadelphia during the early phase of the project and at TVA's offices in Chattanooga and at the job site in later phases.
ABB is committed to Total Quality Management and hopes to extend its partnering relationship with TVA to other areas of supporting clean and reliable power generation.
The project will help TVA to comply with standards established by the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act. TVA, one of the nation's largest electric utilities, is a federal agency established by the Tennessee Valley Authority act of the U.S. Congress in 1933. TVA supplies power to 160 municipal and rural electric cooperatives, 50 large industrial customers and several federal installations.
Asea Brown Boveri Inc. provides products and services for the power, process, industrial automation, environmental control, mass transit and other markets. The company and its subsidiaries have sales of approximately $6 billion and some 30,000 employees in the United States.
