AAUW Celebrates Jane Addams Day on UIC Campus on December 10th.

Chicago, IL, November 04, 2016 --(PR.com)-- American Association of University Women-Illinois (AAUW-IL) and Illinois Woman's Press Association (IWPA) are proud to announce the 10th Annual Jane Addams Day Celebration. The event will be held at the University of Illinois-Chicago Student Center at 1pm on Saturday, December 10th, 2016. Join members and guests for the program "Women, Leadership, and Election Politics: Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr" featuring Historian/Author Louise W. Knight, Professor Dr. Annie V. F. In May 2006, the State of Illinois declared December 10th as Jane Addams Day to honor her contributions to Illinois and the world. During her lifetime, she had numerous, outstanding achievements; Addams was a founder of many important institutions such as the social settlement Hull-House, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. AAUW is very proud that Jane Addams was a founding member of the Chicago AAUW branch in 1889. IWPA also is honored to count Jane Addams as a founding member.

AAUW advances equity and education for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Since its' establishment in 1881, AAUW members have worked on tackling the issues of the day from social to political. The IWPA (since 1885) is an organization of professionals whose objective is to maintain and improve the standards of members in mass communication in IL, to promote their interests, and to provide for the sharing of ideas and opportunity.
