AARP kudos giddy over gray. (Getting The Chair).

They may be retiring, but they're not shy.

AARP Modern Maturity has saluted nine films with its first La Chaise d'Or award -- a trophy featuring a gold recliner chair. Lions Gate's "Lantana" was chosen as best movie, with "In the Bedroom" and "Iris" getting honorable mention.

News editor Bill Newcott says when the mag revamped two years ago, the editors added movie reviews. But that quickly ended when "we found out there weren't enough movies of interest to our readers."

So the editors recently decided to encourage more. Initial suggestions for honorees came from national film critics, with final selections by AARP Modern Maturity mag editors.

The criteria: Movies should be of interest to people over 50, offer authentic portayals of over-50s, portray older and younger people learning from each other -- and be entertaining.

Newcott admits over-50s are not the target demos for big-budget, big-grossing summer fare, but since the magazine is circulated to 18 million homes, it clearly has a large target audience that is ever-growing.

Though there may be an awards ceremony in the future, there won't be one this year.

As for the trophy, "Someone in our art department said, `What about a Barcalounger?' We liked it. This is about entertainment; we don't take ourselves too seriously."

So it's a good thing the trophy isn't a golden bottle of Carter's Little Liver Pills.
