A330 MAKES FIRST FLIGHT WITH PRATT & WHITNEY POWER

TOULOUSE, FRANCE, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The newest member of Pratt & Whitney's PW4000 family of engines made its first flight today aboard the newest member of the Airbus family of commercial aircraft.
A PW4168, rated at 68,000 pounds of take off thrust and developed especially for the A330, powered the aircraft in a three hour and 28 minute flight from Toulouse.
"This is a real milestone for all of us at Pratt & Whitney," said Jim Johnson, president of Pratt & Whitney's large commercial engine business. "This is the most powerful engine ever certified for flight by Pratt & Whitney, or any other engine builder. The years of work with our colleagues at Airbus Industrie have produced a truly remarkable aircraft/engine combination that is going to set new performance standards for our customers around the world."
The PW4168 is the first growth derivative of the PW4000 which entered service in 1987. This new model has a 100-inch fan to produce 64,000 to 68,000 pounds of thrust. The engine is capable of producing up to 74,000 pounds to meet future A330 requirements.
The original PW4000 has a 94-inch fan and produces between 50,000 and 62,000 pounds of thrust. It powers the Airbus A300-600 and A310 and is also used on Boeing and McDonnell Douglas wide-body aircraft.
Today's flight marks the beginning of a 500 hour flight test program involving two aircraft. The PW4168-powered A330 will be certified in April, 1994, with airline deliveries beginning in summer 1994. Thai Airways International and Malaysia Airlines will be the first to take delivery of the PW4168-powered A330. Other customers for the A330 with PW4168 engines include LTU of Germany, Euralair, International Lease Finance Corporation, and Northwest Airlines.
