A.M. BEST RENEWS A+ (SUPERIOR) RATING FOR JOHN ALDEN FINANCIAL CORPORATION'S MAJOR SUBSIDIARY

MIAMI, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Glendon E. Johnson, chairman and chief executive officer of John Alden Financial Corporation (NYSE: JA), announced today that the company's principal subsidiary, John Alden Life Insurance Company, has been assigned a 1993 A.M. Best Rating of A+ (Superior). John Alden Life has maintained this Superior rating since 1985.
Best's rating assignment is based on John Alden Life's financial results and operating performance. The Superior rating reflects the company's favorable earnings performance, its strengthened capital structure and the improved financial flexibility for the parent holding company as a result of its recent successful initial public offering. According to A.M. Best, the rating also recognizes the company's solid position in the small group accident and health marketplace which, to some extent, should insulate the company from the current unsettled issues and the potential adverse impact which may arise from state and federal proposals for health care reform.
Additional reasons cited for the Superior rating include an improved risk-adjusted capital position achieved through the first quarter of 1993 and Best's anticipation that continued improvement in John Alden's capitalization relative to other "Superior" rated companies with a similar operating profile will be maintained.
"We are very pleased to have maintained John Alden Life's Superior rating," said Johnson. "We believe that the company's Best rating reflects a continued recognition of John Alden's responsible growth. As always, our primary goal is to continue to be a leader in the insurance industry."
